About Me
Hello, my name is Melissa Contreras and I am studying Language and International Health with a concentration in Spanish. Outside of academics, I really enjoy reading, solving puzzles like Sodoku, word search, or crossword puzzles, and spending time with close friends. Throughout my college career, I have developed a strong interest in working within a clinical healthcare setting where I can directly build relationships with patients and advocate for their needs.
Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have focused on developing both linguistic proficiency in Spanish and a strong understanding of health systems and patient care. My bilingual abilities allow me to bridge communication gaps that exist in healthcare environments, especially for patients navigating care in a language that is not their own. As a first-generation American, I have personally witnessed the confusion and vulnerability that can come with trying to understand complex systems in an unfamiliar language. This perspective motivates me to become not only a healthcare provider, but also a patient advocate and friend.
My core values as well as my background have shaped my commitment to accessibility and equity in healthcare. I want to work in a clinical or healthcare setting for a year or two after graduation to gain hands-on experience with my peers and deepen my understanding of patient care. During this time, I hope to strengthen my clinical skills, build meaningful relationships with patients, and learn from experienced healthcare professionals. Eventually, I plan to pursue graduate studies, potentially in a Physician Assistant program, where I can further expand my medical knowledge and impact. As I navigate through these transitions, I plan to express warmth within my words and actions, promote teamwork, express honesty in my work, demonstrate commitment towards my goals, and be dependable.
Ultimately, my goal is to combine my bilingual skills, cultural awareness, and passion for healthcare to serve diverse communities. I want to work to ensure that language is never a barrier to receiving quality care and building connections. I hope to build a career centered on compassion, communication, and meaningful service to others.
